The Story Behind the Name “Hank”
When I set out to create my own line of cashmere knitwear, the name was something I didn’t take lightly. My husband and I spent weeks tossing around ideas. A year earlier, we had adopted a rescue pup from ARF in East Hampton—a half black lab, half German shepherd with soulful eyes and a quiet strength. The moment I met him, I named him Hank.
From that day forward, Hank became my shadow—loyal, protective, and deeply woven into the fabric of my life.
While researching terminology related to knitwear and manufacturing, I came across the word hank: a unit used to measure yarn—a coil, a beginning. In textiles, a hank equals 840 yards of cotton yarn or 560 yards of worsted. It struck me instantly. Not only did the name feel familiar and warm, but it also held technical meaning tied to the heart of what I was building.
And so, the brand became Hank—a tribute both to our dog and to the origins of craftsmanship in knitwear.
Here we are together, standing in front of our new Bridgehampton store—his namesake and a dream brought to life.
